The man was found hanging in a basement with a noose around his neck, police said.

HAMBURG -- A borough detective saved a man who tried hanging himself Saturday, police said.

Detective Jeffrey Sokolowski and Officer Devin Gormley responded to residence at about 12:38 a.m. on Saturday on a report of a man threatening to harm himself, police said in a Facebook post

After speaking with the man's wife, Sokolowski proceeded to the basement area of the home, where the man was known to stay. As he tried to enter the basement, Sokolowski found the door was blocked by a washing machine, and, as he attempted to open the door, police said.

The detective forced open the door and saw the resident hanging from the ceiling rafters by a noose around his neck and immediately lifted the man upwards to relieve the tension of the noose. Using his free hand, Sokolowski was able to remove the noose from the man's neck.

The detective radioed for medical assistance and began rendering aid to the man. The man, who didn't lose consciousness, was able to speak with officers and was later taken to Newton Medical Center for treatment.

"If not for the quick actions of Detective Sokolowski the outcome of this suicide attempt could have been tragic," police said.
