The school board will "consider and appoint an interim superintendent" on Tuesday night

MADISON -- The Madison school board is expected to approve a temporary replacement for outgoing Superintendent Michael Rossi on Tuesday.

The agenda for the meeting says the board will "consider and appoint an interim superintendent of schools" at its 7:30 p.m. meeting on Tuesday at Madison High School.

Rossi, whose final day on the job is Wednesday, will start on Thursday as superintendent of the Sparta school district, in Sussex County.

"I'm looking forward to this new opportunity," Rossi said when contacted by phone Monday.

Previously the schools superintendent in Roxbury, Rossi was hired more than five years ago in Madison.

He announced his impending departure in a letter posted Oct. 14 to the Madison district's website.

Tuesday's meeting agenda did not name any candidates for the vacancy.

The Madison school board, in an earlier post to the website, said it is planning to hire a "highly qualified interim" as it seeks a permanent replacement to Rossi.

No timeframe has been announced for filling that position, which is being advertised by the district.

The board said it was not using a search firm "in order to save the often exorbitant fees involved with hiring a consultant," but left open the possibility of going that route if failing to find the right candidate as a permanent successor.

The Madison school district enrolls approximately 2,400 students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade, with five schools and a $43 million budget.
