The woman allegedly crashed her Lexus on Thursday but didn't know she hit anything.

SPARTA -- A New York City woman who is paralyzed from the waist down is facing a DWI charge after police say she crashed her Lexus Thursday.

Officers responded to the intersection of Glen Road and Edison Road at 3:21 a.m. on Dec. 15 on a report of a single-car crash, Sgt. Dennis Proctor of the Sparta Police Department said.

Police found a 2008 Lexus with substantial damage blocking the intersection and when they approached the driver -- Stacy L. Baker, 44, of New York City -- officers suspected she was under the influence of alcohol.

Baker, who is paralyzed from the waist down from a previous condition, was unaware she had struck something with her vehicle, Proctor said.

Due to her condition, officers were unable to perform any field sobriety tests and had the Sparta Ambulance Squad respond to the scene, he said.

She was arrested on a DWI charge and taken to Newton Medical Center based on the totality of the circumstances, he said.

Proctor said Baker had bloodshot eyes, fumbling movements, the odor of alcohol on her breath and admitted to having a drink earlier in the night. She also had an open bottle of tequila in the car.

At the hospital, Proctor said, officers applied for and received a warrant to retrieve a blood sample from Baker.

Baker, who was released to hospital personnel for further treatment, was charged with DWI, careless driving, possession of an open container in a motor vehicle and obstructing the flow of traffic.
