Fredon Township is looking to sell off a 40-acre parcel of the former Bear Brook Golf Club, built as part of a housing development in the 1990s and shuttered since 2009.

FREDON -- A small portion of what was once a golf course is up for auction Thursday night.

The Township Committee is looking to sell off a 40-acre parcel of the former Bear Brook Golf Club, built as part of a housing development in the 1990s and shuttered since 2009.

The auction is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., with a minimum bid of $50,000 Township Clerk Joanne Charner said. The governing committee, though, will have the final say on whether to approve the winning bid, assuming any offer is made.

"We're going to have to know what you're going to do with it," Charner told NJ Advance Media on Tuesday.

Though the committee is holding its last meeting of 2016 after the auction, Charner said it is not expected to decide until its Jan. 12 meeting.

Unlike three other, larger tracts purchased by investment banks, the parcel that is the subject of the auction failed to attract interest before being foreclosed upon by the township.

"There's nothing really on it," Charner said.

The site is the setting for four holes from the golf course and is overgrown with trees and brush. It includes wetlands areas that would make redevelopment a challenge.
