East Coast Equine, based in Tranquility, submitted the lone, $50,000 bid for a 40-acre parcel of the former Bear Brook Golf Club.
FREDON -- A dormant golf course may be revived as a retreat for recuperating horses.
East Coast Equine Veterinary Service submitted the lone bid, $50,000, for a 40-acre parcel of the former Bear Brook Golf Club, Township Clerk Joanne Charner said Tuesday.
The golf course was built as part of a housing development in the 1990s and closed in 2009.
Unlike three other, larger tracts at the golf course purchased by investment banks, the parcel that was the subject of the Dec. 22 auction failed to attract interest before being foreclosed upon by the township.
Charner said $50,000 was the minimum bid allowed under the rules of the auction.
Recounting the discussion at the auction, Charner said a representative of East Coast Equine outlined a plan to transform the site -- consisting of four holes from the golf course and an area overgrown with trees and brush -- into a place where horses could undergo rehabilitation following surgery or treatment.
East Coast Equine, which is based in Tranquility, did not respond to a request for comment.
It focuses on medicine, surgery, and dentistry for horses, with an emphasis on sports medicine and lameness, according to its website.
The auction is not the final step in the process.
The Township Committee will decide at its Jan. 12 meeting whether to accept the bid, Charner said.
If the bid is accepted, the Planning Board will conduct a review.
