Phil Murphy received more than twice as many votes as Assemblyman John Wisniewski.

FRANKLIN -- Democratic frontrunner Phil Murphy won the backing Sunday of a seventh Democratic county organization, with the primary for governor less than three months away.

The Sussex County Democratic Committee voted to endorse Murphy during a meeting at the Irish Cottage Inn.

Murphy received 57 votes, party chair Leslie Huhn said afterward in recounting the meeting.

His closest rival, Assemblyman John Wisniewski, had 23 votes.

Third place went to Bill Brennan with 13 votes. Brennan is a retired firefighter who filed a citizen's complaint against Gov. Chris Christie over Bridgegate.

Murphy, Brennan and Tenafly Councilman Mark Zinna attended the 1 p.m. meeting.

Wisniewski and two other contenders -- Sen. Ray Lesniak and Jim Johnson, a former U.S. treasury official -- did not attend.

Lesniak and Zinna had one vote apiece, while Johnson received no votes.

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, who opted last fall not to run for governor and endorsed Murphy, had one vote.

The Democratic primary is June 6.

Murphy has been endorsed by all 21 county party chairs.

He previously won the support of Democratic county committees in Bergen, Essex, Middlesex, Monmouth, Union and Warren counties.

Votes are scheduled next weekend in Ocean, Hunterdon and Atlantic counties.

Sussex County is a Republican stronghold.

Of the county's 102,100 registered voters as of Feb. 28, there were 41,326 Republicans and 19,391 Democrats, with unaffiliated voters totaling 40,928.
