The Franklin Mineral Museum was burglarized Monday

FRANKLIN-- Police are investigating after an estimated $30,000 in gems, minerals and other precious stones were stolen during a burglary at the Franklin Mineral Museum Monday morning.

Police said burglars forced their way into the museum sometime after 4:40 a.m. through a second-story window. The burglars damaged display cases and ransacked shelves, "causing substantial damage," Det. Sgt. Nevin Mattessich said.

One or more of the suspects is believed to have hurt themselves after blood stains were found throughout the museum, Mattessich also said.

Anyone with information regarding the break-in or who has noticed someone with an unusual laceration is being asked to call Detective Daniel Flora at 862-273-5170 or Mattessich at 862-268-1401. Callers can remain anonymous.
