More than 25,000 homes still remained without power from last week's nor'easter as the latest winter storm hit on Wednesday. More outages are expected
Less than a week after a powerful nor'easter knocked out power to more than 200,000 homes and businesses, another winter storm is causing problems for local utilities still trying to restore power in some areas.
As the storm hit Wednesday morning, the lingering outages from last week hovered around 25,000 homes and businesses - nearly all of them JCP&L customers scattered throughout Hunterdon, Morris, Sussex and Warren.
But as the storm started to intensify, the outages crept back above 30,000 at 8:30 a.m. and the National Weather Service said the worst of the storm is yet to come.
Power companies will continue to work through the storm until wind gusts reach 40 mph or safety becomes an issue, JCP&L spokesman Chris Eck said.

Heavy, wet snow is expected to start falling at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour at 10 a.m. and continue through the afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service said the snow and gale force winds make power outages likely. Some areas could get up to 2 feet of snow.
Hundreds of schools are closed and at least 1,500 flights have been canceled, and Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency.
