The 18-year-old son punched his opponent after his loss, angering the father, police said.
HARDYSTON -- An 18-year-old wrestler and his father were arrested last week after they became disgruntled at the son's loss during a wrestling match, police said.
Police said Ralph Hall Jr., of Stanhope, assaulted his opponent after a loss Saturday, according to a press release from Lt. Robert J. Zicarelli of the Hardyston Township Police Department.
Hall Jr. had competed in a wrestling match at Wallkill Regional Valley High School, as part of a regional tournament, when he was pinned by his opponent, police said.
"After standing up and having the victor's arm raised by the referee, Ralph Hall Jr. punched his opponent in the face," said Zicarelli.
He was arrested by police right after the match.
Hall's father -- Ralph Hall Sr., 41, also of Stanhope -- became irate after the loss and witnessing the punch, police said.
Officers escorted the elder Hall out of the gym, but he continued to cause a disturbance in the hallway and was also arrested.
Hall Jr. was charged with assault and Hall Sr. was charged with being disorderly.
Father and son were later released pending future courts.
