NEWTON -- A judge urged a Roselle man charged in connection with a 2011 armed robbery of a QuickChek in Byram to take a plea deal rather than face life in prison at trial, the New Jersey Herald reported.

Richard Gordon could plead to a 20-year sentence or go to trial on charges of armed robbery, theft and weapon possession, Judge Thomas J. Critchley said. If convicted, he faces life in prison because of his prior criminal history.

He is lodged in Sussex County Jail on $300,000 full bail, with an Oct. 14 court date.

Gordon and Iben Glenn, of Elizabeth, allegedly entered the QuickChek in July and demanded money. Glenn fired a shot into a candy rack when the cashier refused, and the two fled with money from the store safe.

Glenn pleaded guilty in 2013 and was sentenced to 10 years in state prison. James Smith, of Hopatcong, served as their getaway driver and also pleaded guilty, in August. He faces sentencing in October.
