TRENTON -- Three state troopers wrestled a knife-wielding man off a Sussex County woman as he attempted to slash her throat, authorities said.

State Police said in a statement that the division received a 911 call from the Wantage Township woman last Friday. When operators answered the call, no one was on the other end of the line, but a woman could be heard screaming in the background.

When police arrived at the scene, they could hear her screaming inside the residence and broke down a locked door to find Christopher Davidson, 41, pinning the woman down with a knife to her throat. The woman had cuts on her face and forearm, police said.

The troopers ordered the man to drop the knife, but he allegedly continued to attack the woman. The three officers -- Troopers Rick Nugnes and Rob Hunt and Sgt. Bill Cisko -- knocked Davidson off the woman and wrestled the knife from his grip, police said.

In a post on the division's Facebook page, a State Police spokesman said the troopers "would have been justified to shoot" Davidson, but were able to subdue him, saving two lives.

"The thanks they received? Even handcuffed, Davidson continued to threaten troopers and spit at them," the post said.

Davidson was charged with aggravated assault, weapons offenses, resisting arrest, and criminal mischief and is being held at Sussex County jail on $100,000 full cash bail, authorities said.
