STANHOPE -- Visitors to Waterloo Village can see what life was like for people in the days of the Morris Canal as volunteers from The Canal Society of New Jersey hold a series of Heritage Days form now until the fall.
The programs, which started today, will run on every other Saturday and will include hands-on history events, including original music provided by the Long Hill String Band and narrated boat rides on the historic Morris Canal.
Eight of the village's historic buildings will be open highlighting historic trades and crafts, including the gristmill, carpentry and blacksmith shop.
Since 2007, the Canal Society has gradually opened industrial and commercial buildings so that visitors can see what life was like during that time
The historic site was once a bustling 19th century town located along the Morris Canal.
The canal left the Delaware River at Phillipsburg and made its way upwards until reaching its highest pont at Lake Hopatcong, where it gradually dropped down to tidal level at its terminus in Newark.
Waterloo Village Heritage Days run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The scheduled Saturdays are: Aug. 6, Aug. 27, Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 8 and Oct. 22.
