The crash occurred on Rt. 23 in June.

FRANKLIN -- A Hamburg motorist has been charged with assault by auto in connection with a crash two months ago that left a 17-year-old Sparta boy with serious injuries, police spokesman Det. Nevin Mattessich said Wednesday.

Authorities say Thomas J. Scott, 28, was traveling north on Rt. 23 near the Irish Cottage late in the evening of June 15 when he entered the southbound lane. He then struck the teen's southbound vehicle.

Scott also suffered serious injuries in the collision and was airlifted to Morristown Medical Center.

The roadway was closed for several hours for an investigation by Franklin police and the Sussex County Sheriff's K-9 Unit, the county prosecutor's office and the county crash team. The investigation led to the charge against Scott, Mattessich said.

Scott, who was also issued motor-vehicle summonses including reckless driving and improper passing, was released after responding to police headquarters. He will be scheduled to appear in Sussex County Superior Court.
