The 53-year-old bicyclist was ejected from his bike in the crash and sustained serious injuries, police said.
ANDOVER -- A 53-year-old Hackettstown man was seriously injured Friday morning when he was struck by a 2014 Jeep Wrangler while riding on the northbound shoulder of Route 206, police said.
The crash occurred on Route 206 near the Holiday Motel shortly before 8 a.m. when a Jeep operated by Jamie T. Caravaggio, 33, of Hopatcong, veered off into the northbound shoulder of the roadway and struck bicyclist Jonathan A. Nabut from behind, Andover Police Chief Eric Danielson said in a news release.
Nabut was ejected from the bicycle into the front end of the Jeep and thrown over the hood before coming landing on the roadway, Danielson said. Nabut received hip, leg and arm injuries in the crash and was flown to Morristown Medical Center for treatment.
The speed limit in that section of Route 206, Danielson said, is 50 miles per hour, and Nabut's bicycle, a light-weight carbon frame, shattered in the crash.
Route 206 was closed for about 11/2 hours while the crash scene was investigated.
Caravaggio was issued motor vehicle summonses for careless driving and failure to maintain a lane of travel.
The Sussex County Sheriff's Department and Andover Borough Fire Department assisted with traffic control until the New Jersey State Traffic Diversion Team arrived. The Andover Township Fire Department assisted with the landing zone and later with traffic control.
