A mix of snow, freezing rain and sleet is headed for the state.

A mix of snow, freezing rain and sleet will fall on New Jersey on Sunday and Monday, the National Weather Service said.

The winter weather is expected to start as snow. As many as 2 to 5 inches could fall north of I-78.

The snow will change to freezing rain and sleet starting around midnight, the weather service said. Less than a tenth of an inch of ice is expected before changing to rain Monday morning.

Travel is expected to be dangerous late Sunday through Monday along and north of I-80.

The snow could start as early as midday Sunday, the weather service said. The heaviest precipitation will be after midnight through Monday morning.

By late morning Monday, all the precipitation should be rain.

Best time to see the Geminid meteor shower

The snow could let up early Sunday evening, but only temporarily, the weather service said.

The National Weather Service issued winter weather advisories for Mercer, Middlesex, Hunterdon, Somerset, Morris, Sussex, Warren and parts of Passaic counties, effective through Monday morning. Northwestern New Jersey could see up to 5 inches of snow.

The storm will disrupt travel across the northeastern United States, Accuweather reported. It could cause slippery roads and airline delays.

Students should do their homework, but parents should be ready for possible school disruptions, said Elliot Abrams, chief meteorologist for AccuWeather.
