Karma from Mother Nature? Storm knocks out beach where cops were called on nursing mom

Franklin Pond in Franklin Borough remains closed. Watch video

Franklin Pond remains closed on Monday after heavy rains caused significant beach damage overnight Friday.

The damage did not deter a 'nurse-in' on Saturday afternoon, attended by about 50, prompted by a highly-publicized incident on July 31 in which Franklin Borough police were called on a mom breastfeeding her 2 1/2-year-old daughter.

Photos of the storm aftermath appear to show the beach split in half by flooding.

Michelle Ayala of Franklin Borough, who organized the nurse-in, said those who attended gathered as planned on a grassy area overlooking the pond.

"The park was fine," Ayala said Monday.

Ayala had been breastfeeding her daughter, Daisy, when a borough employee -- responding to a complaint from someone else on the beach -- called police.

The arriving officer, though, sided with Ayala, since New Jersey law allows breastfeeding in public.

The beach at Franklin Pond is fairly new. Swimming at Franklin Pond had been prohibited until this summer, when the beach opened June 30.

Family memberships were made available for $100.

Franklin officials have not said when the beach might reopen or announced any refunds.

In addition to the beach being closed, kayaking and other boating on Franklin Pond is temporarily off-limits.
