TRENTON -- The state Senate passed legislation on June 30 designating September of each year as "New Jersey Adopt a Shelter Pet Month."

The resolution was sponsored by Sen. Diane Allen (R-Burlington) and Sen. Jennifer Beck (R-Monmouth) to raise awareness of the thousands of animals awaiting adoption in shelters throughout the state.

"Our shelters are full of loving animals just waiting to go home to a caring family," said Allen. "I think if we can just bring more people into the shelters, they will see that they have any kind of pet they're looking for, whether it's a puppy, dog or cat, even purebreds."

Nationally, between six and eight million animals are placed in shelters each year and, primarily due to overcrowding, an estimated 2.7 million animals are euthanized.

"I have two rescues and a purebred German shepherd at home and I hope this helps more people connect with pets they can bring home and love," Beck said.

Shelters interested in placing a pet in the Paw Print adoption column or submitting news should call 973-836-4922 or email essex@starledger.com.
