SPARTA -- A township man is facing charges after, police say, he rammed his truck into a golf cart at the Skyview Golf Club because the employee in the cart tried to throw him out of the club.

Keith E. Peterson, 57, of, Sparta, was charged with assault by auto and resisting arrest and issued motor vehicle summonses for reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident and improper parking in connection with this incident, Sparta police Sgt. Dennis Proctor said in a news release.

On Oct. 14, police responded to the golf club located at Lafayette Road on a report of five intoxicated golfers who were refusing to leave the course they they'd been asked to leave.

Four of the individuals involved in the incident left the scene, but Peterson remained, Proctor said. After entering his vehicle, Peterson allegedly encountered the golf club employee who had tried to remove him from the golf course.

Peterson then confronted the employee, who was parked in a golf cart awaiting the arrival of police, and an argument ensued, Proctor said.

Peterson allegedly accelerated his truck and struck the golf cart, throwing the employee from the cart, and then fled the scene.

The employee, who sustained a minor injury, refused medical treatment.

A witness provided Peterson's license plate to police and officers responded to his residence, where he became argumentative when speaking to police, Proctor said.

Peterson allegedly told officers he struck the golf cart but claimed he wasn't aware it was a motor vehicle accident and that it needed to be reported.

When officers tried to place Peterson under arrest, he tried to flee back inside his residence but officers were able to subdue him and place him under arrest, Proctor said.

He was released pending a court date.
